- 9:20um second second all in favor
- 9:23all right let turn it over to you Dr
- 9:28so tonight I'd like to give an update on where we are with summer school um so for the high school um at this time um we have summer school for high school so the first session is 78 to 8:15 um from 8:00 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. and then we also have a session 1 for junior high 78 to 725 and then the junior high session 2 will be coming up from 7:29 to um 8:15
- 10:04I just want to talk a little bit about sumers SCH so Staffing one of our biggest dilemmas that we have each year is finding certified teachers that are willing to teach summer school so it's pretty much not an easy task as we do understand that people we do have lives and and summer and and children and other activities outside of school but um so we be began the task um for getting teachers in the late January early February but it's not mandatory that they teach summer school but also um you know if a teacher agrees to teach um summer school you know they this kind of stops them from looking for potential summer employment and have to arrange child child care so um and then with New York State um ending school so late in j and we usually don't have final numbers until like the first week in July but pretty much if we this is how Staffing goes if we don't have enough enrollment for class um then that just puts the teacher out of employment so we can't you know run that risk of of of they if they need some employment they need some employment so even though we try to start early um you know um so and it's also you know like a fine line that we walk between being fiscally responsible with taxpayers money and honoring the commitments with our faculty and staff so want to tell you a little bit about the Staffing and how that goes
- 11:37um so the students at the this is at the high school so Junior High School who's eligible um given time constraint um we usually just offer students with a half a half a credit during the summer and then this usually equates to two marking periods for the regular school year year so students will have needed to pass two marking periods throughout the school year to be eligible for um summer school so we have made um some exceptions such as illness and students transferring to districts late the school Etc
- 12:16and then so curriculum for the courses um we're fortunate to have a majority of teachers in house so that we are able to meet the regular um school year um the regular school year teachers um and the materials to gain materials and talk more about curriculum so the teachers were able to discuss the topics and um this is how we were able to you know form what curriculum is needed for the courses the reged teachers were you know generous with their time and materials and so that we have a robust program at the high school uh and that um the majority of the classes um were offered this summer and they're all graduation requirements so the curriculum has already been established um summer school teachers are reviewing and and you know things are just moving through really well a number of the courses um end in the Regent exam
- 13:15so we also have a few problems to overcome and so the biggest challenges against Staffing and this happens especially at the junior high level so this has been in a trend but we're we're going to work on REM remedying this going forward so for the second year in a row we don't have enough uh you know staff as far as seventh grade math but we do have a plan B um or eighth grade ELA so now we're attempting to develop what we call a ninth grade boost up Academy for the second Junior High session this is what's happening uh right now with Junior High the eighth graders who are going into ninth grade next year we're now um creating a boost
- 14:00up Academy um for those students um so um we were also fortunate to have um Miss Carnegie Kim Carnegie to help us to find a global 9 and a global 10 history teacher from Albany area um just a few weeks uh before summer school started so um with that being said so the update um right now is at the junior high is for the eighth grade is that last week uh this past week they're creating an eighth grade math class they've called students called families to discuss where that's going to be.
- 14:44we're only able to offer math uh for eighth grade is going to ninth grade this year however next year we've had the conversation we're going to develop a full robust summer school we're going to look at our our Grant Monies to look at buses and just develop a really great targeted summer school for the needs of um all students especially in K through 8 and um at the elementary their update is um yeah we had a summer tutoring program for two hours a week and it's from kindergarten um through fifth grade each session is divided and then one hour for reading and one hour for Math and the focus um has always has allowed the students to maintain and improve their skills during the summer months.
- 15:31um the success can be attributed to its targeted curriculum when we talked about this year just developing a targeted summer school what students really need and then uh different engaging teaching methods is small groups side small group sizes which we were able to personalize attention to each students this this is what the summer is made for it should be more personalized and targeted learning so we have that um at the elementary school and of course I wanted to also give to the board what our esy or extended day school year program looks like for our students with IEP.
- 16:09so um there are no cost appearance um it's determined to be eligible in accordance to um the regulations by um the commissioner of education for students with disabilities so we are required to run an environment for up to you know for at least 30 school days during July and August so um then what determines the the csse determines the annual uh the csse determines annual or on an individual basis which students will have es esy for that year so um so pretty much the enrollment so we have 61 students right um this year we had a few families whose children were recommended for a 12mon program in for esy.
- 17:07um the structure is that um the purpose of the esy is to prevent regression in um students with with IEPs and that each student has summer goals that they have to work on some of the activities are we had there's a theme this year um Olympics so actually when um all of the technology went out and it was affecting um we were concerned about you know diff uh what it would affect for our students as far as using technology you know Kim was like Miss live uh Carnegie was like nope nope we have an Olympic theme so we really don't need the Technologies but so that esy was not interrupted so that was great because then we did not come out of compliance with our I our summer IEPs in anyway so which is great.
- 17:57so so at this time I know that um we also have a sixth grade program going and um at this time I know that we did not have as much for the eighth graders but we do have something now for eighth grade in math and I just wanted to make sure that I updated the board on that um that the team came together and worked on uh 8th grade math so we will have it and last but not least I do want to end with some other great news I did send this out already however I wanted to make sure that um all of the board members knew that we were chosen um to be a part of a pilot in the for New York and um where our top 10% of students top 10% performing students will be able to go to any Sunni University um of of their choice for free.
- 18:52and the the premise behind this is we want our best and brightest to stay in New York first of all but second we have sometimes we have students who are high performing students but aren't able to go to college for whatever reason so um the governor started this initiative and Hudson we were chosen to be part of this inaugural um effort uh by the by by the governor and so I've been on one meeting um I've spoken to Derek I'm going to be meeting with the counselors they've already we already know who those top 10 students are for the most part 10% next year and information more information will be forthcoming so this is really exciting amazing thank you.
- 19:40congratulations abely we're excited about that awesome any questions good well thank you very much thank for the update.
- 19:48you're welcome.
- 19:51okay um so then at this time we do need a second executive session for the purposes of reviewing the employment history of a particular person or persons uh I make a motion to enter executive session at 615 p.m.
- 20:11second all in favor all right thank you all for being here there'll be no further business uh after this thank you answer your
