- 1:51second
- 1:51all in favor
- 1:56at this time we have the student rep Court
- 2:01hi all uh my name is Thomas ariny this is my first student report of uh the school year. I thought I'd give a little introduction to me um I'd like to thank that I've touched all the good aspects of the Hudson City School District um I'm in a lot of clubs and I'm a leadership role in almost all of them um I'm the president of mock trial uh BP of modeled un and president of the trian music Honor Society. um I've also played in our musical pit bands and uh done student tech crew in the technology office and interned over the summer uh yeah so that's a little bit about me if you have any questions about that just let me know.
- 2:53um as for the first couple days of school I think we got in really well the technology distribution went well um I'm pretty sure most everybody has Chromebooks and and is ready to start learning on them uh oh okay so as for uh other things going on the uh Athletics of the school have kicked off uh we had I think our first home football game the other week it went very well um it was very refreshing uh to have such a you know full uh viewing and have a good outcome too winning 180 very happy.
- 3:39um the start of school introduced a new rule to our school which is a very big change to the daily life of us high schoolers um that rule being the new cell phone rule um I'm not going to you know give any opinions on that but I think it is kind of my uh duty to make a comment that uh at least the high school I through my experience has struggled a little bit with follow through and uh being strong in these rules and I think that if the district or if the high school is going to make um these kind of rules that change the daily life of students and you know presumably for the better uh you can't let uh I don't know students resistance to those rules uh dictate whether or not they happen or not.
- 4:33uh as for coming events uh the student council has been just starting to plan our field day uh field day is happening on the 25th of September all board members are welcome to sorry welcome to come um it'd be a good school Community event to come see. uh that week of the 25th Wednesday being field day uh is our spirit week um um we'll have flyers and and notices sent out about that in case people want to know about it and then Friday is homecoming uh homecoming football game again I'm I mean invited to come I hope I hope as many people come as they can and uh yeah I think that's it thank you thank you thank you
- 5:23thank how are people liking the food
- 5:25okay well yes that is another thing the the cafeteria has been fantastic awes um I haven't brought food to school yet last year I every every day brought my lunch but uh this year I haven't brought lunch once so thank you awesome
- 5:47okay there's no need for early executive anyone have any questions on the Personnel this agend
- 6:02I would like to make a motion to accept Personnel G items a through S

- 10:29uh we're about to convene into the public comment period of our meeting
- 10:32Although state law does not require us to hold a public comment period we've chosen to do so because we believe it's crucial for us to hear from our community members. Having said that, please note the board is here to listen. It's not designed to be a discussion. Um, we will take your questions and concerns seriously and have the proper administrator get back to you. Uh, each speaker is given three minutes.
- 10:55J, you got probably cringe when you hear my name now, but I am the President of the junior high PTO and I was wondering if I could hand out a newsletter to you. Yes, please, can I appro the thank you.
- 11:12Just a recap of what we accomplished last year, what Jill really accomplished last year. Um, but what we're trying to continue what Jill started. Um, we are always looking for members so obviously any parents or teachers from the junior high. The other thing, uh, we are doing is a fundraiser uh partnering with coyote Flo. Um, coyote Flo is a restaurant in quav um that is owned by one of the Junior High student uh fathers Christian Lopez. So he agreed to do this P Taco kit. Everybody wants to see this. I'm hoping to and get people to Jo in and help F some events for the kids. It's a great idea.
- 12:09Um, also wanted to ask if we could post these in the schools like student or teacher lounges and main office. You want this? I've also been sharing everything on social media so everybody wants. It's every Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday now through December. Oh wow. But I can also, I don't know if it can be shared through parents square if that's something that's allowed. Um, I have a digital copy so I don't, who would I email that to? Yes, okay, all right.
- 12:44I would appreciate it and the junior high did share this out through parent Square already to the parents of the junior high because like I said we're just hoping to get a lot more members donations and post fun activities and events for the High kids because it's kind of been lacking in the past few years. So thank you, we're excited. Happy to see the news.
- 13:15Sage, hi guys. Um, I am here from Hudson Hall to report on some exciting programs we have coming up for the Hudson City School District. Uh, this fall we um, and I brought Flyers, can I, can these out to you please? Um, the first thing that we're doing is, well it's actually the last thing that we're doing but the one that will come across your desks, which is a performance of a show about the Life of Frederick doulas. We're doing a ticketed public performance on Saturday November 2nd, but on Friday November 1st we're offering the show to the Hudson High School students. Um, so we've invited them to come over to Hall and enjoy a professional performance um about the Life of Frederick Douglas.
- 14:04It's very exciting, we have a phenomenal jazz pianist who's doing a new score for the piece and an incredible actor playing the part of Frederick Douglas. The soprano made bust of Rhymes cry so it's going to be really really exciting. So we're thrilled about that. Um, and that's really the only thing that'll probably come directly to your attention, but the jazz festival is also starting at the end of September and we've invited the Hudson City School District Band program to come, just put this to come.
- 14:35We are doing a free community day and it's on Saturday September 28th and we have a band Led by the phenomenal Melanie Charles will be performing and they're doing what's called a Mega Jam. So they'll play a set and then they open it up to people to join them in the jam session so that'll be really fun and we've invited the Hudson Band program to come and participate.
- 15:03Um, and then the last thing that we're doing as part of the jazz festival directly related to the students is that on Saturday October 5th we've been doing these like every year for the last four years five years. Uh, during the Jazz PES we have a Performing Artist who's coming up come and offer a master class Workshop to the band program. So the students are invited to come on Saturday morning and work with um this trumpet player who's probably going to be winning his first Grammy this year because he's insane. Um, and he's super excited to work with the students um on Saturday October 5th.
- 15:41So, and they generally when the musicians come they really get down into the pit with the band and really play with them and talk to them and share their experience about what it's like to become a professional in the music industry and to live the life of a touring musician. So it's a really great opportunity for our students to see what that's all about. So yeah, so and also everyone is welcome. Come to the Community Day, come to see no cowards in our band, come to Al please if you're [Applause] fre.
- 16:23Sage, are there digital copies of these somewhere if we wanted to like post them on our own social media?
- 16:29Absolutely, I can send them to you all and then also um Scott warwal will have the music directly programmed as well. And um the one for no cowards in our band has been given also to the administration here. Okay, so yeah, so I'll make sure that those get down so.
- 17:14Tonight's superintendent uh report will focus on the first uh week of school. So as you can see on September 3rd 2024 we had our district um September 3rd 2024 we had our this superintendent conference dat. So as you can see the morning was filled with our guest speaker. Uh, we had um uh principal Celli who is uh Nationwide speaker, he was a principal teacher Etc. He gave our keynote address but also um Dr pessy spoke about our initiatives with d and we also had Dr Corte Tes to speak about our teaching and learning initiative.
- 18:00And um also um over the summer we had several professional development that was happening with our teachers and and other faculty and staff members. But everything we're doing is focusing around our six keys to school Improvement. So on the first day of school was September 4th, here are just some visuals from the first gift school. We had the Hudson City police to join us to greet our kids as they came. We also had a fraternity group from Albany, um alpha alpha fraternity, that they reached out to me and said hey you know Hut is not that far away from Albany would like to come in and and and help to um help you know just to welcome your students.
- 18:44back to school that was great also there's just scenes of our students and uh from that day the students had a wonderful time you know our cafeteria um they were so excited to be in there Etc so we had a great um um I wanted to touch a little bit about the cell phone rule we're not referring to it as a policy because as you know policies are made by the board so therefore it's a it's just a rule that we have for the high school so so far it's been well received in the high school um at freshman orientation 90 in there was at the freshman orientation there was 90 income in ninth rents and
- 19:24also our enrollment has increased this year and it seems like we keep getting used students every day that are registering so that's fantastic and um so no parents or Guardians had concerns regarding the new cell phone this is a picture of what the cell phone pouches look like um the pouches their number students are assigned in the classroom so what will happen is you know students will place the cell phone in the numbered pouch and at the end of the period they get their phone and it can be used during transition and lunch right always been taught in leadership that would take I couldn't just take the cell phone from the students I kind of wanted to make sure that they still had
- 20:07access to their phone but understand the importance of them not having a phone during instructional time and it's impact on instruction overall so the students um pretty much have warmed up to it I haven't heard any any confrontations or anything about the cell phone and soon as refusing so I haven't heard any negative report so if a student doesn't place the cell phone in the pouch the assumption is the phone is in their locker or turned off uh the students are aware that if their phone is used or goes off in class the teacher will ask for it and then go to the office for the remainder and the phone will go to the office for the remainder
- 20:47of the day so Mr Riden has emphasized the high school staff that there all need to be on the same Paton for St Ru and I walked into the high school yesterday and Mr was walked around and I said hey Mr R I sent your text he said yeah I don't have my because I'm modeling what I expect which I thought was great so I want to talk a little bit about blue HW Cafe um we reimaged you know the the blue HW pafe they upgraded and we have a newly renovated attracted you know attractive amenities in high school as you can see we have uh different High tables we have boots going around the windows flexible
- 21:29seating so now our cafeteria is known as the bluea cafe and so the team a team and I um worked on this for a year from last year and just brainstorming and so now we have um you know really nice uh cafeteria that our students um can enjoy their lunch and also I want to let you know um our um food um Food Service the orders it has increased Lisa just told me by 5% so far but so um and I will ask her to kind of give an update later on in October about where we are with the food service but everyone is raving about the food choices and the amenities now and and I
- 22:12go in and I see students talking to each other for it's the cafeteria is doing just what we expected it to do this year so it's been a great opening with that so far all right so next on my a superintendent report tonight on the board agenda the board is going to be approving the school comprehensive education plan for the m g c Smith Elementary School for this year the 2024 2025 year and in the future Mr brenman will come and talk about the set plan where they are he will give updates along with me um so this year how did we get here the set plan was created because um of the state data that we received and um
- 23:19we had parents to work on the setep plan um with with the school team last year so why are we making this commitment it's um so after serving a random selection of students um there were commonalities here so the commitment the first commitment on the plan is to Foster relationship between adults and students to sure they feel that they have advocates in their support so this is just information that came out from uh data that we have and one of the reasons why we had to create a set plan is because of some of a groups of students their needs were not being met whether it be in attendance um academics Etc so we're making this commitment this is mcss
- 24:09we're all making this commitment together because we want students to feel more of a connection with the staff they have a desire to feel accepted by both staff and peers they're concerned this is the feedback we got they were concerned with buling in the building they wanted their voices to be heard they wanted to know more about their teachers on a personal level and they wanted to feel that it was a sense of safety in the schooling community so the vision was to have a community of Learners that feel safe accepted and heard and um it's essential that all students feel that way and that when they come to school every day that um as staff members that they're able to
- 24:49be heard without judgment so when students feel safe and they more likely to come forward with concerns this will enable our students to become more tightly a Titan community and so this information was also given to me in conjunction with um Mr Bren he helped to create this update for the setep um for tonight tues so one thing that's going to be implemented this year is ruler so what is ruler ruler is an approach to Social and emotional learning it's um it teaches intelligence to people of all ages with the goal of creating a healthy and more Equitable Innovative and compassionate Society so it helps to recognize emotion emotions in this in one self and others it helps us to
- 25:38understand the causes and the consequences of the emotion um labeling emotion with a Nuance vocabulary its expression of emotions in according with cultural norms and social context and then it's also about regulating emotions with helpful uh strategies so a key Strate strategy on the commitment one is that um the strategies the team identified as necessary to
- 26:08Address commitment one was to build relationships with students through the use of ruler to participate in house and house Community Days which I think this already happens at MCS Just DE cartis on this is where they have the house communities but it's all built around character education and positive um behavior intervention supports checkin and checkouts um which identify students and uh they'll be assigned to staff members within the community um to whom checkin and checkout will happen daily and just to include more specific goals based off of PBIS.
- 26:44So the fourth one will be to Foster Family connections so families and specifically Hispanic with whom schools has not connected with will be communicated by the beginning of October and they'll be invited to a family success planning meeting at the MCS so building relationships with students through the use of ruler during daily morning meetings this what happen so as you can see they'll the implementation will be they'll expand ruler with the additional faculty they expand a ruler committee with additional faculty members they'll continue training staff when R faculty members they'll have teachers review schedules to identify times approximately 20 minutes to plan daily morning meetings using the ruler program.
- 27:34They'll offer family training um implementing ruler Charter at home specifically for the Hispanic families they'll audit classro for mood leader and class Charters with a 95% of having the mood leader posted and then you'll be professional learning communities or plc's um they'll examine social emotional learning data including um data including sent out of class referrals and other pertinent data to determine ruler if to determine the ruler effect and especially on Hispanic students.
- 28:09The reason why it there's a repetition of especially Hispanic students because those were the students that the data came back that we need to do a better job of serving at mcscs so key strategy number one building relationship with students throughout the use of ruler during the daily morning meetings again you can see it's all about ruler media ruler online research developing trauma sensitive classrooms so they'll use what works clearin house article on the importance of morning meetings a funding for family Charter night and then scheduling will be a professional development morning morning meetings from count night.
- 28:55So we have we planned this out last year I know today Mr brenman met with um teams of teachers um to start talking about plc's what they would look like so this is at the beginning stages but again everyone will be updated ongoing as to how it's going up by the school principal and I'll join him or he may bring some of his team members to join.
- 29:24So refining house community the implementation this is on this is key strategy 2 um so house celebration days with house Partnerships Etc sitting next to next to each other again with focus on Hispanic and Multicultural themes that will be use them among classes and collaboration of activities there'll be schedule house Community Days when partnership works together on activities connected to our chor education words using a diverse text.
- 29:58We also have positive behavior in schools committee which will continue to provide focus and resources for exploring the words that the words throughout the year so character words will also be streamlined to feature a rul of emotion in multiple languages to bridge a connection between behavior and emotional regulation. I hope that you can follow the pattern to speak we are um addressing all of our six keys to school Improvement here and where we're also talking about multiple languages just to make sure that we're serving all of our students and being very mindful of that uh to serve all of our students because we embrace the fact that we have students here that speak multiple languages.
- 30:43We will they will create a universal signal for listening and stopping talking to be practiced and used at all celebration or Community Days and assemblies under key strategy number two we find house Community Days the resources that will be used are scheduled so dates for house celebration and Community Days the process will be Partnerships created between grade level the slideshow read alouds to educate and communicate words the process will be continued PBIS or positive behavior in school's character education committee and then research caring School Community Works clearin housee evidence report.
- 31:29Under key strategy number three check in and check out and check and connect the Implement implementation would look like counselors staff and the PBIS team will review the checkin and checkout sheets to reflect more specific goals they'll expand the pool of the checkin and checkout and check and connect staff members by 10% to allow for relationships with students and staff members they'll purchase engaging Rewards and they will enter the cic points into educ climber which is a program that tracks data here.
- 32:04So check in and connect Partners will establish three behavioral goals for each day during a 3 to 5 minute meeting in the morning and go over their success and challenges at the end of the day in another 3 to five minutes under key strategy number three which deals with checkin and checkout and check and connect resour here are using tailored supports to advance educational Equity there's an article on multi-tiered system of support that we read Around DC public schools funding for additional rewards increased staff to be part of check and check check in and check out and check and connect and then disciplinary reports will be used and attendance reports will be used.
- 32:52So key strategy number four we're talking about home visit and family connections me so the implementation would look like creating a spreadsheet for families not connected with the be by the beginning of October as again we've just started this implementation process but wanted to give you a chance for just to see where we are and where we are in the process at mcscs so by the beginning of of October and we will cross reference the grade level chairs to determine families with whom to schedule plan planning meetings.
- 33:23So again his families will be identified and flagged for necessary strategies so we'll establish a team in October of Faculty members and staff who will work together to communicate with and support families who have been targeted for lack of communication and connection. The team will create a template for family success plans and meetings will be created to be used consistently with families during these meetings um there will be a a family involvement campaign that educates all families about their reasoning behind the importance of Parental involvement and then social media outreach videos neighborhoods getting get togethers meeting families uh family learning nights Community programs visits School Representatives representation at all local events and this will take place um under the implementation for key strategy number four.
- 34:20Key strategy number four again the
- 34:23resources that will be used is getting started family engagement and positive goal orientation this is a re research base it's a resource on establishing positive relationship it's also parent involvement strategies that are research based and there's an article on parent involvement programs there'll be a team of faculty and staff members to serve on a parent involvement committee there's data on Hispanic parent involvement media resources to communicate goals with the community access to community spaces to visit neighborhoods parent mment survey and funds to pay staff to run literacy and math nights.
- 35:03we have commitment to which is to De to develop and Implement an effective multi- system of support you're going to hear this word over and over again mtss multi-tier system of support these are practices across all grade level and setting to provide academic social emotional and motivational behavioral support needs that increase student engagement and proficiency across all content areas.
- 35:27one thing I can say about mtss is not a wait to fail model it's a proactive model and in this proactive model is where we look at data we look at students who are working on different tiers but we give targeted interventions to support the students based on the on their on their tiers where they where they are on the tiers.
- 35:48so why we are are making this commitment is just on the academic is to to have a consistency of practice and effective instructional interventions at tier one and tier two then under attendance um we we do need to pay a lot of attention to our attendance across District however when students are not in school they're unable to do well academically so we're going to explore reasons behind poor attendance and find strategies to address these.
- 36:20so under social emotional learning by implementing seal supports students will be able to effectively build and maintain relationships with their school Community leading to further engagement and learning throughout debate and then students Express a need to further support and help navigate peer relationships and conflicts so disciplinary data suggests that students are in need of support in recognizing and regulating their emotions.
- 36:53so commitment to some key strategies are the team identify them as necessary to address the commitment one implementing daily writing instruction minimum one sentence cross curricular exit tickets will be shared uh peer editing Friday letter daily page writing workshops on on office te and then utilizing mindfulness activities throughout the day and implementing RAR um lessons will be use will'll be using Comm apps and then we also have branch and Minds which is our mtss framework.
- 37:33we'll also incorporate Avid which is advancement via individual determination strategies into core instruction to facilitate learning and enhanced instruction so you'll learn more as we you go on about Abid and what the what the um the strategies are in having so these are using common terminology and instruction approaches.
- 37:58so leverage an attendance monit we leverage an attendance monitor to analyze and improve attendance of our Hispanic students so this will be done by collaborating with our Hispanic families to create success plans and increased communication regarding attendance then identify specific challenges and strategy solution partnering with um with MCS.
- 38:21so writing instruction implementation so I do want to say that last year when I came for the needs assessment we are working hard to improve our writing a daily writing instruction across the district one of the things and well right now I'm speaking of MCS yes.
- 38:39so one of the things that you're having conversation about is what does it look like when a student knows that they have that their writing is where it should be so one of the things that I noticed when I came is that that we need to use a rubric the best rubric that I think you can use to assess students can use to assess already is the rubric that goes along with our state assessment.
- 39:02so one of the things that I had conversation this year with um Mr brenman is about in elementary schools you know we have to get those rubrics and take them to the students desk so that the students can see when I'm through with my writing piece is it a is it a one a two a three or a four and what what things are needed under each what things are needed in my writing based on the score that I received so they're also self assessing aot way.
- 39:32this might not make sense to some right now but we're going to explain this more but we have to have um we have we have to improve our writing across the district and how we are teaching writing in our classrooms across the district.
- 39:49so some implementation in the daily writing structures at the elementary school is that teachers evaluate where the day wearing the DAT to fit writing record as recorded in the grade level meeting so they'll offer yearly professional development to teach us on best practice and Dr cour Tes and I work Dr cour Tes is working on this distri so we we will have um refin these strategies and and and really be able to come back again and report to you where we are with this.
- 40:19so they determine which writing strategy is best practice um and is most appropriate for each grade level and then students in grades 2 to five are writing for a minimum of 15 minutes daily in a variety of content areas and they're also journalin during morning meetings wee to encourage writing and mindfulness.
- 40:38as you know writing can be taught throughout all curricular areas so that is what we are hoping to Embark and consistently you even if we may not have a specific writing block writing can be taught to Reading Writing can be taught to math writing can be taught to social studies w we talk to science all areas.
- 41:03so the implementation of the daily writing so here's some resources teaching academic content and literacy to English langu to English Learners again flexible scheduling professional development plcs of professional learning communities or the use of teach teaching and learning coaches and um grade level meetings to discuss data and implementation curriculum strategies.
- 41:30so under utilizing mindfulness I uh activities throughout the day and implementing ruler lessons each class will establish a classroom Charter at the beginning of the year at the end of each trimester classes will revisit and revise their Charters as a classroom Community each classroom will schedule a morning meeting to review ruler lessons and revisit the mood meter.
- 41:55admin and counselors will use restorative conferences to support students experiencing conflicts with peers there'll be a blueprint of conference a blueprint conference will be used to promote emotional regulation and build empathy and that professional learning communities will examine social emotional learning or SE data to determine the effectiveness of the ruler
- 42:18program especially on our Hispanic students so on the key strategy to utilizing mindfulness activities throughout the day and implementing ruler lessons so some resources are ruler child study center article and efficacy and innovation of ruler com app subscription and ruler or coaching support under commitment to incorporating Avid strategies in the cor instruction what would that look like survey teachers from each grade level to see which components of Abid schoolwide they would like to keep adjust or get rid of to compile a list of average strategies and protocols that are both useful and practical to standardize instructional practices across grade levels create non-negotiables for each grade level and the school to implement and then to roll out usage of aage strategies to parents at back to school night and throughout the year.
- 43:21key strategy under commitment key strategy three under commitment two is again incorporating aage strategy into the Core Curriculum so the resources that are going to be used is an aage coach and then a shared driver document that outlines average strategies for the teachers to reference.
- 43:41key strategy for leverage and attendance monitor to analyze and improve attendance of our Hispanic students so implementation will be the use of data for Hispanic students Target families with children who are chronically absent 18 plus days and develop success plans um for those families to host family success plans or fsps with every student with chronic attendance challenges to create attendance professional learning communities that includes teachers and health office staff Personnel in addition to counseling staff Personnel. we'll ensure PLC meetings regularly they review attendance data and create additional action steps in addition to fsps and then we utilize attendance the attendance officer to contact the Hispanic families of chronically absent students to identify specific challenges and strategize Solutions partnering with the school.
- 44:42leveraging attendance this is leveraging the attendance monitor analyze and improve attendance of Hispanic students so the resources here will be district attendance liazon and then scheduling bi-weekly attendance for professional learning communities or PLC just a brief overview of the set plan for mcss.
- 45:13thank you very much any questions no I I appreciate that I think when thinking about improving academic performance we're also thinking about the socio emotional components that underlay that so I just appreciate that this plan has both of those interwoven thank you very much.
- 45:33question question yeah sure um I'm just a little curious on the specifics of the uh New York State assess English assessment rubric being used starting like really young Ian I'm just I'm just wondering like why you do that instead of having it be up to the teacher and have the
- 45:58so because we begin with the end in mind the end result is uh we are graded by the data our story is told by the New York State assessment that's part of our story and a big part of our story and so New York deems that students have to pass this assessment and so the teachers can use that rubric that will will tell them once they give those formative assessments where students you know or students write that they can look at the rubric and the students can say hey in my informational writing piece I was scored a one by my teacher so what was I missing.
- 46:43so according to the New York to the New York state test it says an informational piece of writing should have these different components so if I received the one as a third grader on my writing from the teacher when they score my writing I'm going to be able to take this rubric and see why didn't I make a four or why didn't I make a two or why I did not make a three and then that helps to to guide them on what should be included in an information of persuasive writing so that that's why everything we do at the foundational level has to be strong to get us to that level which is passing the regents passing the state assessments.
- 47:28so that's the end where we want to be so we have to prepare students just like on that website they have item analysis they have models of what the test would look like everything and it's all based on standards so everything we do has to be based on the New York State Standards but if we go on that website that gives us Exemplar writing what it should look at it will help to prepare our students I'm not saying that teachers should teach from that but teachers should look at that because that's the end result of where we want students should be to to be
