- 0:55the seniors. So, um I met with uh Rean on Friday just to discuss to see what's uh going on programming at at the senior center. Um, right now for programming, most of it's done by the county from uh like 9:30, I think, until 1, which they also have um seniors can buy meals. Uh they they run between 15 to 20 seniors a day depending on the activity that the county running. uh the our senior center portion still has I think uh Zumba uh on on the calendar that comes in I think once or twice a week. Um and that seems to be um the only programming on the city side is the Zumba and basically is a drop in kind of atmosphere
- 1:58>> um you know for uh you know you know the programming it's basically a drop in uh place uh you know social drop in. So, um it would be nice that you know we can at least have something on our side that could be offered um you know to maybe bring some more seniors in uh to uh the senior center. It is open I believe uh from 9:30 to 5 um uh Monday through Friday. Um, so the uh so right right now the we don't have a commissioner um as of last week there hasn't been one. I guess there's some people that they're looking at and I mean the administration's looking at to appoint someone but they haven't have anybody yet to uh to fill that position. So that's going to give us a little bit of a gap. So, I'm going to have to check in
- 3:02probably monthly with Reagan to to see if, you know, if any any changes and kind of give updates on what's going on at the senior center, you know, so if anyone has any thoughts, ideas, you know, there seems like a lot of space available to do activities, especially around this time with all the new updates with Medicaid and Medicaid, uh, Medicare there uh you know benefits uh social security benefits. I think that it'd be great if we could get speakers in there to talk about any updates uh with the colas and things that are going on that affect our seniors right now. Uh Calvin is running uh late so he'll he should be here. to your point about the um programming. I don't know how often, but um the healthcare consortium would be happy to come in and do some of that um as a speaker. And Nina, I've talked to Nina before, Nina
- 4:04Benedo from Office of the Aging before about like if we had ideas about programming, she'd be willing to come in or help facilitate a guest person. Do you know how many members the senior center has right now? >> No. >> No. I think it's a dropping. >> Yeah. But the the only one the only attendance they have is is for the county program. >> Okay. >> Which is run by the office for the aging. >> All right. >> Uh so that's that's a senior nutrition location. >> Okay. >> Um they have them on in different points of the county. Uh so um and that's run by I can't remember her name but it's but it's through office of the agent. >> Will they help with transport? >> No. >> No. >> No. I don't think they have transportation. They do I think they have if they have events. >> Okay. >> Uh but I don't think they do u transportation. Um but um if they do activities, I know the county has a bus. >> Okay. >> But as it w it wasn't mentioned that there's any transportation because that
- 5:07would be nice if they had >> a bus to run down to Providence Bliss, >> you know, certain time. >> Yeah. >> Uh and uh >> probably some help. >> Yeah. more people there. And this is the the senior center at the library, right? >> Yes. >> But there is another one. There wasn't >> Yeah. Second line. >> Yeah. But that would be great. They could coordinate, >> you know. I mean it, you know, they got the county bus. >> Mhm. >> Um, you know, that um, you know, but there that's still >> I don't think it goes to the library. I think it go >> I think it does stop on fair >> at Fifth Street. Okay. Yeah. >> U, but that's just a general stop, right? Yeah, but they did say in the past that um >> if more than one person call and identify a need of a stop that they'll consider the route. So, >> okay. >> Um I don't know if that's still Michael, but Michael Shitz might have more advice on that, but how to make a stop. >> Michael's not a supervisor. >> I know, but he like the resources. >> Well, what when I I try to do the same
- 6:12thing and they need more than they they need a good number. uh because they're not going to add a stop that's going to jeopardize the timing on the other they said >> uh so they would need a considerate amount of time I mean people so I try to do the same thing with my new new location >> um but uh for work and even though it's only less than half a mile from the from the stop at the at the hospital >> but they wouldn't do it unless I can guarantee so many people every seniors are home and then a lot of people who help seniors are at work. So it's like they'll have no way to get there. >> No, I think it's great. I think it's a especially if even if it's a pick up, you know, in the morning and and go back and home, right? So then they're they get their meals, they get activities and it helps with the socialization. So u I you know I can check with um you know Nina and I can check with um Ran to see what good timing um and then how we can get it posted up you know at Providence uh in Bliss you know and um crosswinds
- 7:16you know it' be great to have those three areas >> but and uh any any other questions or anything about this senior center >> I guess just Uh maybe a good way to gauge some of that interest because most of the uh consistent riders for the county bus are from Providence and Bliss. So maybe if there's like a we find a way to get a survey of people that ride the bus like if senior center was a stop would you utilize it and maybe that could show >> um yeah or or even the survey at the senior center. Right. Right. To say you know is this something you would benefit of? Yeah. >> But I I Yeah, I think I think going to Providence, right? Because because if if they're on the bus now, >> they're there for a reason, >> right? >> They're going shopping, >> right? I think going to Providence and going to Bliss and doing the survey there.
- 8:17>> Yeah. >> Right. Because that's where your numbers would generate, right? Because if you try to do it the riders on the bus, right, they they're they're already going to point A to point B, right? So we want to have more people using using it and for the purpose >> and if they're already at the library they had some way to get there. So we got to find got to find >> I can tell talk to Eleanor to see if I can get a survey uh see how many numbers in their next activity or something to see if we can get a survey together. um you know it just you know three or four or even have Eleanor ask around or send something around say hey you know would you be interested in trans would you use a senior center if there was weekly transportation to and from >> I'd be happy to go handel surveys and pick them up if you want >> okay so I'll work on some survey questions like I don't want to overwhelm it's basically just want to know listen we I'll talk to Reagan and say what's the best time, right? And then also, you
- 9:20know, with the added county, right? So, they can add, you know, you know, they can get a meal, right? They can go there during the meal time. So, it's 9:30 to 1 county time or 9:30 to even at 3 uh for uh social time and then maybe it can generate more activities if there's more people from 2 to 3 or 2 to 4 uh that are there. can generate more activities at the senior center >> rather than you know keeping you know keeping it safe and that that basically what we need is we need attendance to bring the programs in right or the presentations right so I think having them there and then offering you know even if it's a monthly thing from like you said healthcare consortium I don't know if everybody understand you know say you know healthcare consortium they provide you know transportation and medical transportations and you And uh you know so having you know in their programming what they offer right for seniors office for the aging you know they have you know the new supposedly legal aid is supposed to be coming in um
- 10:26and taking uh the place of the the attorney they had there once once a week um Rose I think Rose Lee. So that's that's another thing. So I think the survey would be a great start. Okay. Anyone else from the >> Calvin's here? >> So, usually when I'm in meetings and and people are late, they have to do karaoke. Calvin, so I can I can bust some grooves here for you in my mind. >> I got the climb on this, I think. Um, okay. So, I guess we're uh any other any other questions? Any any any anything about seniors? >> So, we'll bring it to you, Calvin, for we'll start with your report. Uh, so this report was a a mashup of
- 11:30both January uh and February. Um, so January for us um was a bit of a wonky uh month. Um, but we overcame the the heating issue with the boiler. Um, give you guys an update on that. Um, uh, meeting were able to resume program as of the 6th of February. Everything got back on track. Uh, no no uh, no issues uh, since. So certainly grateful for our vendor who is actually a an alum if you will of the Hudson Boys and Girls Club Matthew Shook. Um and so he's been a great help to us. >> Um since then on February 11th uh we welcomed our um our commissioner uh Darren Collins senior and um he's he's really hit the ground running with us. He's uh he's he's come in he's met with uh folks at the department. Um we've uh we've met with uh council members. Um we have a meeting with the mayor's office
- 12:36on Monday. So he's really been all in since his arrival, helping with uh brainstorming about program ideas and really just helping us maintain um the fabric of community and the legacy um of the department. So, it's really been a great joy to be working with Darren. Um, uh, uh, can we go back here? >> Um, we wrapped up, uh, you gale basketball um, as Valentine's Day of last month. Um, that was a great turnout as well, just to see the families. Um, it's funny, you know, you may get one kid from the family, but then you have like their younger siblings, you have grandma, you have the aunties. So, it's really a family affair. Um, and you know, we had another successful season with that. Um, big thank you to the to the district for allowing us to use their uh venue. Um, huge thank you to our sponsors. Um, all of our coaches, our volunteers. Um, so huge thank you to
- 13:39our volunteers, our referees. were high school students and so you know again it's a really community effort uh to make that possible. Um give you guys an update uh at our last meeting. Columbia Kitchen helped us with uh getting meals to our families during our closure. Uh so they've really been a really consistent um partner with making sure that our families are getting nutritious meal. Um things to look forward to in the spring. We are looking to uh feature some different uh programs. We're hopeful that we can introduce flag football, which is an alternative to tackle. We are not trying to impose upon Pop Warner. Um but we do recognize that some families are concerned about um CTE and brain injuries and such with tackle football. Uh so flag football does um offer that alternative. Um, and I think it's I think it's probably more co-ed friendly um as well. >> So, uh, with our next slide, can we go
- 14:45to our next slide? Um, so during the break, we did, uh, during the mid winter recess for the district. Um, we were scheduled to be closed. Uh typically that gives staff the opportunity to regroup, brainstorm, collaborate, clean up the space, things of that nature. But provided we have it closed two weeks prior, we did pivot to feature programming during the week. And so we did we were able to uh take the kids to a field trip as well. Uh we took the kids up to the New York State Museum and they also went uh ice skating. And so at the museum they featured the um the Barbie uh exhibit and so that was a really fun um activity for our kids and uh later on in the presentation I have a few photos about that. Um but again just uh showing our efforts to kind of diversify the programming that we offer parenting something both recreational and educational for the kids. Um, next slide.
- 15:50Um, we also took some time during that break to do some staff development. Uh we had a trainer come up from uh Peak Skill to talk about social emotional learning with our staff, ways to support kids in program, how to address an outburst, how to maintain uh kind of cl not we don't have a classroom, but I'm calling like classroom behavior, classroom control. Um just really getting a a feel on the environment, maybe setting the ambiance of the room. perhaps, you know, the lighting is a little overwhelming or, you know, something to that effect. Um, you you'd be surprised uh what kind of fits the the bill for our kids. And so, again, I think a lot of that takes building that rapport to learn how to best support their needs. Um we also took that time to discuss uh some compliance things in house just to make sure every everyone's um records are sound especially with tax season upon us making sure everything
- 16:54was uh copacetic to the treasurer's office and just our our in-house um compliance. Um we uh also took that time to gear up for summer camp. Believe it or not, we are in the um registration phase of summer camp. And so um with uh we can we can move on to the next slide. Um this next slide just kind of that that's a a recap of that week. Um and so you know as you saw uh President's Day was on the 16th. So, we were able to feature four days of programming that week or excuse me, three days of programming that week. We took that Wednesday to dive into that in-house training as well as the um the social learn social emotional learning training. Um and so again, as I said, typically we would have had that week to still achieve some of those things, but provided we were in program, it was a blend of both professional development
- 17:56and programming. And so here, you know, some of the program highlights. Uh in the in the top row, um we our kids were able to go over to the courthouse. Actually, they featured a uh Black History Month um exhibit for the month of February. Um so that's that top row. Uh in the middle row here, this is the uh the uh the Barbie um exhibit at the museum. Uh to the left there, this is uh this is the Ken group. So you got your brother in there. This is the the Barbie mobile and uh they also have a carousel. And um those bigger kids probably some you know they have a good time as well. And actually this uh this kid here that's uh Naomi Jackson. Um she was uh she was um uh February's both student of the month and staff of the month. So February was a good month for her. She's
- 18:58actually been a joy to to work with. And um these bottom two were photos from the ice rink um after the bargain exhibit. The kids went ice skating at the at the plaza there. And on the bottom right there, that is Chanel. Chanel is our student of the month for our third through eight group. And so u moving along. This um this is just a overview of the programming that we featured for the fall. Uh provided we're coming up on spring. Some of that is going to change a bit. Um but again, just to give you guys an overview of those programs um uh whom we serve and uh who's who's facilitating them. >> Yes, these are photos from the art box with uh for Joan. Um they they were uh these were some creative uh sculptures uh that the kids made kind of machete um uh models and um but that's a very
- 20:04consistent group there. Uh young was like once a week and she gets a a good turnout every week and so we really found some just good consistency with that program. moving along. Um, so we also during the mid- winter recess the week of February 16th, we address some uh biohazard uh concerns in the uh attic portion of the building. Um, disclaimer that the kids have no access to that area. Um, strictly um, uh, staff only. Um, and even with that, we're not in that space. It's actually quite toxic to be up there without the proper equipment. Um, so as such, we did, um, we put out a bid, um, and, uh, while while we found a we found a recipient that was able to come in and address that work for us. And so, um, in these next photos, you can kind of see
- 21:07the before and after. So, the before is on the left and the after is on the right. uh birds that it's all feal matter and such uh from birds and everything else that comes along with that. Um so that job took I want to say maybe like a week and a half. Um but we we were certainly happy with the results. Um that that issue has been taken care of and uh you know we don't see this being an issue um in the future. Um, you know, as I mentioned, we we wrapped up our YDL uh basketball league. That was a great success. Um, YDSL, sorry, soccer league is is coming up. Um, registrations for well, I'm saying coming up because again, we're we're shifting gears and getting ready for summer camp. And so, those registrations for YDSL will be made available June 1st. Um, so leading up to that, we are working with Giannis who is a parent of
- 22:15a of a member. Um, he's a community member. I believe his day job is marketing. Um, but just as a parent and a person that uh loves soccer, he's volunteering his time to support us in developing the soccer league so that it becomes more attractive and just kind of more robust to those that are interested. So, some of the ideas that have been posed was having like a watch party for the the World Cup. Um, just to really kind of drum up the excitement, get folks out engaged, and hopefully they will then find interest to play soccer. Um, these are just some photos from uh the basketball league. Um the photo on the left is the skills and drills in our group and those are our youngest kids that come to just really learning the the the basics of basketball, teamwork, and so um it's a fun group there. And to the right that is our um our older
- 23:19group. They get to play uh they do more game play, more five on five. And those are the that's the Brogski family. They are um siblings and then that's um a snapshot of our uh sponsors for the league. >> So as I mentioned um we have uh registration for camp available that went out last week. Um so spread the word. Um we are now accepting registration for Oakdale summer camp. um you know, we we give families six weeks uh to register. Uh that gives us just the breathing room to assess, to plan for successful summer. Um and so we do encourage everyone to honor that deadline um so that their kids can can enjoy uh can can enjoy camp >> usually apply online or can they go in in person?
- 24:21>> So So yes, great question. So registration is online. >> Okay. >> Um all registration is online. >> Um we we that has worked um in our favor uh to just kind of streamline everything to the online portal. >> Um and for those that may need assistance, we do invite them to come into the center so that we can assist them. Um so um yeah, >> yeah, you can say my slide. Uh and so we will um we'll continue to um collaborate with uh DSS. DSS supports us with our our transportation needs. Um and uh yeah, with our transportation needs and the school district uh supports us with the meals. So, we'll continue with those partnerships. They've uh been successful for us in the past. And um otherwise, you know, just just an update that we
- 25:23are going to be hiring for counselors, lifeguards, uh bike shop apprentices, and and part-time labor for um in more recent news, this Saturday is the polar plunge. So, this Saturday, March 7, um it it's not too late to sign up if you're interested in taking into the lake. Uh the the funds go to a good cause. Um it's a it's a three-way split to the youth department, the dive team, and Perfect 10. uh for us at the department, it helps us afford um safety materials. Um whether it be uh AEDs to support and uh you know in a life-threatening uh situation um and yeah for us we really just try to gear it towards something that can benefit the most um whether it be safe or something to that effect. >> What time does that start on the side? >> No 12. Uh so that is my presentation
- 26:30for the deep. I would tell you that I had my um step in this from Massachusetts uh and her friend was in the basketball and they went and they really were very impressed on the basketball the last weekend. Uh they went over and watched the game >> and were very impressed. I'm glad especially uh >> stating that they don't have anything Massachusetts with that. So, >> um just a couple thoughts on I don't know much about soccer, just just thoughts I had. Um, so with the World Cup >> Mhm. >> would it be a good time to maybe focus around the World Cup may and like try to do like a pre- indoor because you don't need as many numbers in like an indoor soccer world cup to
- 27:33get them interested in the the June signup, right? Even if you do like a, you know, four-week program, you each each team can be a country, right? And kind of get them kind of, you know, interested. And I say indoor just because indoor it's weather safe, right? And uh um we used to do indoor at the um high school at one point, right? So um just a thought kind of just uh get the interest of the kids. Right. Right. especially and you know you could do do a good indoor program with 25 kids, right? Because you don't need as many on a team, right? There's only four or five on on on kind of like basketball. I mean, four or five on on each side. So, um especially since you can circle around the World Cup, right? >> Um you know, emphasis of it, you know. Um but uh that just thought >> Yeah, definitely. Um yeah, I think it's a good effort to draw up some interest leading up to World Cup, >> especially since your tennis has been
- 28:35growing with the outdoor league, >> right? >> Um every year, you know, >> um is is so I know we talked so is can you speak a little about the staffing um updates? I know you spoke with mayor and everything and you know, is there any staffing updates that you want to talk about? So conversations are ongoing um and uh more specifically this is about um allocating funding to support uh to to pay the um assistant director. Um so that that discussion um is ongoing. Um uh we intend to kind of dive into the depths of that um at our uh Monday um meeting. Um but you know again uh I have a few um strategies um if you will to um suffice you know for that position. Uh it is crucial I think to the overall success of the department. Um it does uh allow um you know some of the duties of the
- 29:36assistant director includes supervision um of staff and so I being one person uh my capacities are a little capped um at times and you know I think to offer the most both to our staff uh and the kids that we serve um we are inclined to really try to find the funding for the assistant director um you know again so that we can provide a really a robust um uh program uh to to our community. And so um you know I I'm I am hopeful um about that conversation. Uh you know for me everything leading up to it uh feels um hopeful. Um and again I think on Monday we can actually discuss a plan rather than you know um being hopeful. >> Great. Um, and I know we've we we spoke Friday and and Darren was there and you guys you guys had some great thoughts. Do you you want to do any early thoughts on future
- 30:38programming ideas to get to tickle people's fancy of some of the great thoughts that you guys are coming up with? >> Yeah. Yeah. Uh, you know, with that it was really just kind of being, you know, exploring the things, being creative about what programming looks like. uh some of what we discussed was featuring uh some uh potentially weekend hours um uh maybe to the effects of like a a breakfast club, right? And so uh the notion with that is maybe you know from 9 to 1 by 9, you know, staff are making u a pancake uh brunch breakfast if you will. Um and then we feature um you know some social some social work activities. Um that could look like um maybe something uh in the space, you know, a basketball game in in the gym or maybe going to Grand Port Park or um you know, another component to to add um in addition to the breakfast. Um you know,
- 31:41for me this um I had an an experience at Sienna College. They have a mentoring program. Um, every Saturday, kids from Arbor Hill would land there. We would go to the cafeteria, do breakfast, and we may go apple picking. Um, or we may go to the library and and do a read along or something to that effect. Um, you know, I think it it it builds great um, you know, I think it it builds community. you know, I think it encourages whether it's volunteers or parents to really get involved with the department um and make a contribution um whether it's to their child um or just the overall department. Um but I do think it's another way to to really uh tap into community and let folks know what we can do um here at the youth center. Um um another uh another idea was um you know again just exploring some of the uh the the opportunities that may be out there that could lend itself to uh camping. um you know living in Hudson you know I I'll speak for myself uh
- 32:46growing up living in Hudson camping was not appealing to me right but um as I've grown right and embraced different opportunities um you know it I I've had the experience of going camping and it is fun it is cool right being in the outdoors the air kind of feels and it uh feels different um and you know I think it's a good experience you know just to expose our kids to different opportunities, different outlets. Um, I know our program coordinator, she had an opportunity to go uh Nira, she had an opportunity to go horseback riding. That was made possible through her experiences at the Boys and Girls Club. Um, so, you know, again, just being creative about what we can offer our kids so we're just not offering the same thing over and over and, you know, burning the kids out, let alone let alone staff. You know, when I when I worked at the youth department as a council, playground counselor, um we actually did an over overnight camping right out of
- 33:49jail. We have horseshoe all these tents. >> Yeah. >> Right. And uh and we had marshmallows and everything. So it was really cool cuz you know cuz you got that spot and we just everybody got their tents like parents came in help put them up and everything. So, uh, yeah, we we kind of, you know, took it to the, you know, the woods a little bit, but we're still in the city. But >> yeah, you could get a portable like, um, a movie. Yeah, that would be good. >> Yeah. And >> we did it. Put up a projector in our backyard, >> right? Everybody get scared. It's closer. Phone call later. Just don't play the 13. But uh and then um is there any other thoughts because you >> Yeah, so we um uh just kind of shifting gears a bit. Um there was a a concern brought to my attention in regards to open link with the thinning of the ice. Um heard the air raators. Um it was brought to my attention that some folks
- 34:52were fishing or attempting to fish um on the water. Um so uh once that uh once we were aware of that we um we took immediate measures to put up um signage of um we put up a English version, a Spanish version and a Bangla version um along the entrance um at Oakdale again just to prevent folks from going on the ice and then also giving uh APD an opportunity to enforce um said expectation. Um, you know, we hate to have anyone um have an accident on the ice. >> And so, um, uh, it may, yeah, it's kind of, you know, I wouldn't think I have to say it that, but we really had to put up the signage to let folks know to to stay off of the ice and it's really not safe to to be out there. >> Yeah, it is tricky because it's been so cold and people think it's >> thicker than it it is, especially with
- 35:54the airators in there, you know. So, but uh yeah, but that's that's great. You you addressed it very quickly and very very happy with that. >> I just have a question. If wins their game, are do you guys plan on going up Saturdays? >> Oh, great question. So, we we're we're hopeful that we can um organize um a charter bus to to Yeah. to support, you know, to support our own um you know, Keith Robinson is a kid that is often at the department. Canon pretty much >> Hedge, >> Coach Hedge. Yeah, I was going to say the whole team pretty much, you know, they are members of the department. Um and you know, we want to support them, right? They they are in one way or another champions, right? And so we are looking to see how we can afford that. It may be a collaboration uh with um with Promise Neighborhood. Um but our Yeah. Our intention is to go and support. >> Cool. >> When would they know? Tonight. >> Yes. It's depending on tonight's when
- 36:57Yeah. >> Yeah. They're about to play 20 minutes. >> Yep. >> Okay. Any other questions from the council or >> I don't have any question actually. What is the um the summer youth employment >> too or just through the like what's the training look like for summer new staff that you're getting broke to? >> What does the training look like? >> Yeah. >> So training um takes place the week uh prior to camp. So that whole week we have a robust um training schedule. We go over um uh um CPR, AED, first aid. Um we go over um you know um uh leadership and kind of management of groups. Um it's a it's a yeah I could I can share that with you. It's a full week >> um of training um again week prior to camp. So that way >> hopefully it's still relatively fresh um in the minds of our of our counselors. I was wondering because if there were sections of the training that could be
- 37:59applicable to like all summer youth employment kids that maybe you could charge a fee to like the overall workforce >> to make some money back like maybe a CPR course, maybe it's just like overall leadership >> stuff that they could get at for on the job training as being first-time staff cuz I know a lot of the kids get placed in some of the programs have that training, some of them are just like one off um like internship type situations. So just wondering if there's parts of your training that you could open. >> Yeah, I mean I'd love to kind of you know just review what we can all what we have and maybe figure out perhaps what we can you know implement to then feature that to other um you know other organizations. >> A lot of that is mandated because you have to do your safety plan through DOH right because you >> D everything through the property. Yeah. Yeah. >> Right. So, so they they kind of dictate a lot of that safety plan that you for your training, right? That you have to
- 39:01cover through the safety plan. >> Yeah. The various safety plans. Yes. Y for sure. >> Um the other part that I wanted to mention relative to our closure that took place um in January um our contingency plan. So ultimately uh what that means is if ever a situation like that were to occur um again at the department uh mechanical issues um you know what have you our plan is to shift uh to the central fire station. So that's the fire station um uh nearest Oakdale. Um so essentially what that would look like is if the uh youth center was um not accessible for one reason or another, we would then just pivot programming to the central firehouse. um our our littles at the library would remain at the library and um we would just kind of follow suit with the things that we've been doing already in terms of our um our phone tree um if you will with notifying the district um our bus company, our food
- 40:04vendors about that that change in venue. And so I was able to have a a great conversation with um uh Sean Hoffman um at the fire station uh and he was fully supportive of us using this space um if if need be. >> Great.
